Way back in time, when - exaclty a month ago on Apri 1st - we had the most beautiful sunshine in Germany (Hessen) I spent an wonderful afternoon on my balcony "sewing" a little pincushion with a Hot Wheels Grey Ford '56....

 

Vor ganz langer Zeit - genau heute vor einem Monat am 1. April - hatten wir den schönsten Sonnenschein in Deutschland (Hessen) und ich habe einen wunderschönen Nachmittag auf meinem Balkon damit verbracht ein kleines Nadelkissen aus einem grauen Hot Wheels (aka Matchboxautos) Ford '56 zu nähen.  

• do NOT raid your kids (husband's) car collections, you will regret it....
• pick out an "open" car model in any toy isle, mine is from REAL (a throwback to childhood, I could have spend hours the toys section)
• auf KEINEN Fall die Autosammlung der Kinder (Ehemänner) plündern, das bereut ihr...
• ein "offenen" Automodell ist in jedem Spielzeugregal zu finden, meines ist vom REAL (ein Trip zurück in die Kindheit, ich hätte Stunden in der Spielzeugabteilungen stöbern können)

 

• now you have to "eyball" the size of the pincushion that fits your car
• I made mini cardboard pattern and tested the size
• the Front & Back template is smaller at the bottom/bigger at the top which gives the pincushion the form of a "breadloaf", that way I have more "pinning space"
• Top & Sides 3x / Bottom 1x / Front & Back 2 x a total of 6 pieces
• jetzt müsst Ihr die Größe des Nadelkissens für Euer Auto "pi mal Daumen" schätzen
• ich habe mir Mini-Karton-Schnittmuster zum testen gemacht
• die "Front & Back" (Vorder- und Rückseite) Vorlage ist unten schmaler/oben breiter dadurch bekommt das Nadelkissen eine "Brotlaib-Form" und ich habe mehr "Stichfläche"
• (Top & Sides = Oben 1x und (lange) Seitenfläche 2x / Bottom = Unten 1x / Front & Back = (schmale Vorder- und Rückseiten) 2 x) insgesamt 6 Teile

• after I cut all 6 templates, I like to sew everything by hand (sitting on the balcony....) but even though the pices are pretty small you should be fine with machine sewing them
• leave a little bit open from the long side line for turning and filling
• nachdem ich alle 6 Vorlagen ausgeschnitten habe, nähe ich sie mit der Hand (auf dem Balkon...) aber auch wenn die Teile sehr klein kann man sie sicher gut mit der Nähmaschine nähen
• lass eine kurzes Stück einer Längsnaht offen um es zu drehen bzw. zu füllen

• then turn it from left to right side / inside out
• dann von links auf rechts wenden

 

• this is how the still "empty" pincushion looks like
• so sieht das noch "leere" Nadelkisschen dann aus



• now you have to fill it, I am using the filling of the IKEA "filler cushion" INNER for this, € 1,99 for a 50 x 50 cm filler cushion full of washable polyfiber last me quite a few pincushion long...
• jetzt noch füllen, dazu benutze ich die die IKEA INNER Kisseninlets, € 1,99 für ein 50 x 50 cm Kissen voll mit waschbarer Polywatte reicht für eine ganze Menge Nadelkissen



• and now we have to close it, any way you like works, however, after ein finished mine I found a very nice tutorial on "positivelysplendid"  for  an invisible or blind ladder stitch perfect for closing any cushion etc.
  
• und jetzt noch die Naht schließen, ganz so wie es am besten passt, ich habe  auf "positivelysplendid" eine sehr schöne Anleitung für eine "unsichtbare/blinde" Leiternaht gefunden mit einer perfekten Bilderanleitung auch für jeden der kein Englisch spricht/liest

• the last step it to"glue" the pincushion into the car, I am using a double sided sticky tape, the stuff you can get for glueing carpets onto the floor etc.
• der letzte Schritt ist dann das fertige Nadelkissen ins Auto zu kleben, dafür benutze ich doppelseitiges Klebeband, das selbst Tape dass man auch für Teppiche benutzt

The Exhibition "Project Diaspora" (SelfPortraits 2014) on view until Aug. 20, 2017 by the Senegalese photographer Omar Viktor Diop.

 

Fantastic self portraits with a twist. To quote Raquel Wilson, a Cultural Curator: "...A journey through time, the photographic series delves into and exposes less spoken narratives of the role of Africans out of Africa. With this body of work, Diop challenges us to rethink our own ideas of history and gives answer to his ongoing, internal dialogue of who he is as artist and person. ...Diop has focused this first installment on Europe during the 15th through 19th centuries. Inspired by the many baroque artworks created during this time, he considers this period as an awakening of an intense (and previously non-existent) era of interaction between Africa and the rest of the world. Using portraits of notable Africans in European history as his inspiration, Diop pits their life-journeys and legacies with those of his own...".

 

What was missing - information.

 

I have never used my smartphone in any exhibition as much as in this gallery (which belongs to a University....), not just to take photos but to "get" the beautiful pictures. The SCAD FASH exhibit curators did a fantastic job with the presentation of his work. The lights, the rich blue background and open space, fantastic and very impressive. But sometimes a beautiful presentation is not enough, especially with this work by Omar Viktor.

Ayuba Suleiman Diallo

(1701 - 1773)

Ayuba Suleiman Diallo, also known as Job ben Sololom, was a famous Muslim who was a victim of the Atlantic slave trade. Born in Bundu, Senegal (West Africa), Ayuba's memoirs were published as one of the earliest slave narratives, that is, a first-person account of the slave trade. He was enslaved about two years in Maryland and afterwards being brought to England, was set free and sent to his native land in the year 1734.

I really loved Victor Omar's  pictures, even more so after me and my sister "researched" each and every African personality he impersonated in them.

And we really enjoyed the atmospere in the SCAD FASH. You have to visit the ladies room ...

A Quilter's Bullet Journal

One large grey Moleskine Cahier and and the coloring pages from the "6 Köpfe 12 Blöcke" BOM, a page index and notes on anything I want to keep track off - et voilà another  Quilter's Bullet Journal

 

 

The coloring pages are a nice idea, it helps to play with the colors of the block on paper, in the end the second from above is the block I sewed.

 

 

 

I followed the instructions marking a diagunal line on the lilttle squares which I then sewed onto the corners of the bigger squared and cut the remaining triangle off. Which left me with a lot of fabric waste...

 

 

 

Enough fabric for Rolling Stone's  little Star Sister...
